UMA
The optimistic oracle Polymarket uses for resolving markets.
UMA is the optimistic oracle Polymarket uses for resolving markets. When a market reaches its end, Polymarket relies on UMA to report the outcome; until UMA finalises a result, winning outcome tokens cannot be redeemed and settlement is effectively paused.
Key behaviours
- Optimistic reporting: UMA accepts an initial proposed value (a claim about the event outcome) and makes it available immediately unless challenged. This lets markets move quickly toward settlement when there is no dispute.
- Disputes pause settlement: If any party challenges the proposed outcome, the dispute process kicks in and settlement is delayed until UMA voters reach consensus. While a dispute is unresolved, outcome tokens remain non-redeemable.
- Finality and redemption: Once UMA reaches a final determination, Polymarket allows the standard CTF redeem/merge flows to settle winning shares for pUSD.
In context on Polymarket
You will encounter UMA most directly when a market resolves or when a market you hold enters a disputed state. The interface will show a resolution status and may indicate a UMA dispute; during that time you cannot redeem winning outcome tokens until UMA's process completes. Because disputes can pause settlement, resolution timing is not guaranteed even after a market's scheduled end.
