Polygon
Definition
Polygon (often referenced as the Polygon network) is the Polygon PoS chain (chain ID 137) that hosts Polymarket's contracts. It is an EVM-compatible layer that provides low-fee, fast transactions anchored to Ethereum.
In context
Polymarket runs its smart contracts on Polygon, so all trading, CTF operations (split/merge/redeem), and pUSD balances exist on chain ID 137. Because Polygon is EVM-compatible, standard Ethereum wallets (MetaMask, Rabby, WalletConnect-compatible wallets) work for connecting to Polymarket. Polymarket sponsors gas via its Relayer, so users only need pUSD to trade; they do not need native Polygon tokens for gas.
Why it matters for traders
- Low fees and fast finality reduce the friction of frequent CTF operations (splits/merges) and order placement. This makes intra-market arbitrage strategies like buying complete sets or opposing legs practical.
- EVM compatibility means tooling and developer libraries for Ethereum work on Polygon, simplifying integrations with Polymarket's APIs and SDKs.
- Because Polymarket uses Polygon, all on-chain settlement, transfers of ERC-1155 outcome tokens, and pUSD balances are recorded on chain ID 137.
